Hello, Alcott Community!

I am so thrilled to be a part of the Alcott team! I wanted to use this space to let you know a little bit about myself.

I am a Washington native with time spent living in Seattle, Spokane, and Woodinville. I received my elementary teaching certification at Whitworth University in 2000, and then completed my master’s degree through the University of Washington. At that time, I began teaching second grade in the Northshore School District. I also taught third, fourth, and fifth grade. I absolutely love teaching and working with students, so you will see me in classrooms as much as possible. I have been a principal in the Lake Washington School District since 2014. Wow, time flies! My outdoor interests range from snowboarding to golf and anything else outdoors. Friends and family provide the humor and joy that life has to offer along with any northwest sporting event! I love watching the Mariners, Sounders, and of course, the Seahawks.

My partner Ashley and I have two wonderfully creative and spunky kiddos, Ava and Early. We enjoy spending time together any chance we get! Like you, I embrace moments of celebration with my own kids and work to support and nurture them during those “teachable moments”. Thank you for extending student learning at home. Involved and caring families play such an important role in student achievement and I appreciate it! This school year, whether you are family or friends of Alcott, I ask you to do your part to support this great school! Get involved with our wonderful PTSA. Choose at least one event to help with or reach out to our amazing staff, as they support and challenge all our learners. For those of you who are new to Washington, Redmond, or Lake Washington, we know you will feel welcome!

Barb Deming | Alcott Associate Principal

Dear Alcott Family, Barb Deming Picture

It has been a pleasure getting to know the students and families at Alcott over the past five years. I’ve worked in a variety of educational settings and consider it my calling to serve others. I graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Bachelor of Science in Education. I earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Washington State principal certification at City University. I’ve taught 3rd grade, 6th-8th grade, and coached a variety of sports with children age 5-16. I served as principal and Early Childhood Director of a small private school in Redmond. And, over the past four years I have had the opportunity to serve as an Associate Principal in 4 different elementary schools in the district.

My favorite past times involve spending time with family and friends. My two sons bring me the greatest joy. I love watching them play Lacrosse and Soccer, going to the lake, and visiting family in Iowa. I also enjoy working in my yard and relaxing on my patio with family and friends.

I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work in such a diverse community with knowledgeable and effective educators. I look forward to another year of supporting student learning, the safety of our students, and partnering with families to make each student experience at Alcott a positive one.

In joyful service,

Barbara Deming
